Upsells

What is an upsell? 7 practical examples

An upsell is an offer for a higher-value version of what a buyer is already choosing. See how it differs from an order bump, 7 examples, and rules that keep it from annoying people.

An upsell is an offer for a higher-value version of what a customer is already buying, such as a bigger plan, an upgrade or a larger bundle. It can appear before, during or after the purchase. The strongest moment is often right after the buyer has agreed to pay, because the only question left is whether a better or extra item is worth having too.

That timing is why upsells work, and why they annoy people when they are done badly.

Upsell, order bump and cross-sell: what each one is

These three get mixed up. For a seller, the useful difference is where the offer appears and how much explaining it needs.

Where it appears What it is Needs explaining?
Order bump On the checkout page, before payment A small companion item added with one click No, a line or two
Upsell Before, during or after purchase; often after the buyer commits to the first step A bigger plan, an upgrade or a larger bundle Usually, so it often gets its own page
Cross-sell On a product page, in the cart or after purchase A different product that goes with the first Sometimes

If the extra item belongs in the same buying decision, make it a bump. If it needs a paragraph of its own, make it an upsell. In Plandalf, order bumps stay on the same invoice and purchase record as the main product, and upsells run as a step in the same sales flow.

Seven upsell examples

  1. Course to course with coaching. Someone choosing a $97 course is offered the $297 edition of the same course, which adds the live group calls.
  2. Single licence to team licence. A template buyer is offered the same template with team seats before they pay.
  3. Monthly to annual. A subscriber on the monthly plan is shown the yearly price with the saving spelled out in dollars.
  4. Basic to premium tier. A buyer picking the entry plan sees what the next tier adds, in a sentence per feature.
  5. Guide to guide with templates. Someone buying a setup guide is offered the complete edition of the same guide, with the ready-made templates included.
  6. One ticket to a bundle. An event attendee is offered the workshop day as well as the talk.
  7. Starter to growth plan at trial end. A customer whose trial is ending is shown the higher plan they keep running into the limits of, with the price difference in dollars.

Every example has the same shape: the offer is a bigger or better version of the same product the buyer is already choosing, and the obvious next step for that buyer, not a random product. Most can be shown before payment or right after it. Offering a different product alongside, such as a coaching session with a course, is a cross-sell.

How to run an upsell without annoying buyers

Buyers don’t resent being offered something relevant. They resent being slowed down, tricked or asked twice for the same details.

  • Don’t re-ask for details. A buyer who has just paid should not have to retype an email or card number. Plandalf’s checkout is built so a post-purchase upsell already knows who the buyer is.
  • Offer one thing. A menu of upgrades turns a decision into a chore.
  • Make the no easy. A plain “No thanks” link that goes straight to the confirmation. Hiding it in small grey text is how you get refund requests.
  • Match the first purchase. Offer what a buyer of that product plausibly needs next. Selling a spreadsheet template? A bulk licence makes sense, a mattress doesn’t.
  • Keep the price honest. If you show a “was” price, it must be a price you have actually charged. If you add a countdown, make it real. Promos tie the countdown to the price or coupon so they expire together.
  • Show the total. The buyer should see what they will be charged now, and what repeats, before they click.

What to test and what to measure

Run one change at a time, and look at the numbers that pay you:

  • Take rate: the share of buyers who accept the upsell.
  • Revenue per buyer: total revenue from these buyers, upsells included, divided by the number of buyers. Average order value divides by orders instead, and post-purchase offers can add orders, so the two differ. A cheap upsell with a high take rate can earn less than an expensive one that fewer people take.
  • Refunds and support tickets on orders with the upsell. If these rise, the offer is confusing or pushy.
  • Completion of the first purchase: an upsell placed after payment should not change this. One placed before payment can.

Test on and off for a week or two and compare the same days of the week. Small stores won’t get a clean result in a day.

Setting one up in Plandalf

Plandalf supports upsells as part of a multi-page flow: plan selection, buyer details, payment, an upsell page and confirmation, rather than one long form. A reasonable first setup:

  1. Build the checkout for your main product.
  2. Add an upsell step that follows the first purchase and offers one related upgrade.
  3. Run a test purchase with the upsell accepted and declined, and check the totals, the invoice lines and any follow-up email it should trigger.
  4. If you sell subscriptions, plan the opposite moment too: a save offer gives a cancelling customer one relevant alternative.

Stripe or PayPal still processes the payment. Plandalf is $49 a month or $490 a year with a 14-day free trial; check the pricing section for current terms. If you are deciding whether you need a whole funnel tool for this, read funnel builder or checkout? what you need.

FAQ

What is an upsell in simple terms?

An upsell is an offer for a higher-value version of what a customer is already buying, made before, during or after purchase. Upgrading to the annual plan or adding a setup session are both upsells.

What is the difference between an upsell and an order bump?

An order bump is a small add-on ticked on the checkout page before payment. An upsell is a higher-value offer that usually needs its own explanation. In Plandalf it runs as a step after the buyer commits to the first purchase.

What is the difference between an upsell and a cross-sell?

An upsell offers a higher-value version of the same thing. A cross-sell offers a different product that goes with it, such as a case with a phone.

Do upsells work for subscriptions?

Yes. Plandalf supports bumps and upsells for one-time, package, tiered, volume and subscription prices.

How many upsells should one checkout have?

Start with one. Add a second only if the first is being taken and your refund rate isn’t rising.
