Questions

What goes into your all-in rate

What moves the number, what the audit can and cannot see, and where your file goes.

What is an "all-in" Stripe rate?

Every cost Stripe took, divided by the volume you processed. Most people quote the headline card rate. The all-in number also counts currency conversion, payout costs and the fees kept on refunded charges, which is why it usually lands higher than the rate you signed up for.

Why is my rate higher than the one I signed up for?

Usually the mix of cards. Cards issued outside your country cost more than domestic ones, so a shift in where your buyers are moves your average without anything changing on your account. Currency conversion and refunds do the rest.

What do currency conversion and payouts cost me?

If you charge in one currency and settle in another, Stripe takes a conversion margin, and holding a foreign balance and paying it out has its own price. For a business selling abroad this is often the second biggest line after processing, and the one most people have never looked at.

Do refunds cost me the processing fee?

Yes. Refunding a payment returns the money to the buyer, not the fee to you. A month with heavy refunds quietly raises the effective rate on the revenue you actually kept.

Are failed payments worth chasing?

They are usually the largest number in the audit, and they are not a fee: they are revenue you did not collect. Expired cards and soft declines are involuntary and a good share come back with retries, a card updater and a dunning sequence. The audit separates those from genuine declines so you are not chasing the wrong ones.

Does it include Stripe Billing, Tax or Connect fees?

No, and neither does your payments export. Billing, Tax, Revenue Recognition and Connect are priced separately and never appear in that file, so no CSV tool can see them, this one included. They are opt-in, and most accounts are running at least one nobody remembers switching on, so the audit tells you where to look in the dashboard.

Which file do I upload?

The payments export from the Stripe dashboard: Payments, then Export. The standard column set is enough, and you do not need to customise it.

Does my data leave my browser?

No. The CSV is read by JavaScript on the page. Nothing is uploaded, and the report is kept in this browser so a refresh keeps your place. Clear the import and it is gone.
