Native integration

PayPal + Kit (ConvertKit) integration

PayPal buyers on a Plandalf checkout can be tagged in Kit and dropped into an email sequence, using the same steps as card buyers.

No credit card required. No coding required.

Does PayPal integrate with Kit (ConvertKit)?

Not directly: Kit and PayPal never talk to each other here. PayPal takes the payment on a Plandalf checkout, and the completion path that runs after a card payment also runs after PayPal, so a sequence can use native Kit steps to tag the subscriber and start their emails. PayPal refunds do not take the tag back automatically.

What moves between PayPal and Kit (ConvertKit)

EventFrom and toThroughWhat happens
Checkout completedPlandalf (paid via PayPal)KitNative stepThe PayPal docs say the same Plandalf completion path runs as after a card payment, so one Checkout Completed sequence with a Kit Tag Subscriber step should cover both kinds of buyer. Confirm it with a sandbox payment.
Invoice paidPlandalf (paid via PayPal)KitNative stepUseful for writing a custom field such as plan in Kit. The Plandalf docs describe this trigger for renewals but do not say which payment methods renew, so test a PayPal-paid recurring price before you rely on it.
Cart abandonedPlandalfKitNative stepA visitor who typed an email and did not pay can be added to a Kit form after a wait of 5 minutes to 7 days. The docs do not describe a visitor who walks away while approving a PayPal payment, so check that case in test mode.
Refund in PayPalPayPalKitBy handInvoice Refunded is documented for refunds that succeed in Stripe. After a PayPal refund, take the Kit tag off by hand, or run Remove Tag from Subscriber in a sequence you start yourself with a Webhook Trigger.
Subscriber joined form, tag addedKitPlandalfNative stepPlandalf adds the Kit webhook when you save the trigger. Joining a form can start Enroll in Promo, which gives that person their own countdown before they reach a PayPal checkout.

Tag PayPal and card buyers in Kit from one sequence

You need a PayPal Business account, a Plandalf checkout and a Kit account where you can create API keys.

  1. Add PayPal to the offer

Open the PayPal integration in Plandalf, connect your Business account and switch PayPal on for the offer. Leave card payment on as well so one checkout serves both kinds of buyer. Connect the sandbox environment for the rehearsal below.

  2. Create a V4 key in Kit

In Kit open Settings, then Developer. Under V4 Keys choose Add a new key and call it Plandalf. Use the V4 key, not the legacy V3 key listed beside it.

  3. Connect Kit under Automation

In Plandalf go to Automation, then Marketplace, find Kit under Available now and click Connect. Paste the key and wait for Kit connected.

  4. Start a sequence on Checkout Completed

Under My Sequences create a sequence with Plandalf as the app and Checkout Completed as the trigger, and pick the checkout under Offer. On the Test tab choose a recent checkout so the variable menu fills in.

  5. Tag the buyer and start the sequence

Add Kit, Tag Subscriber with Email Address set to {{trigger.customer_email}} and a tag such as Customer. Then add Kit, Add Subscriber to Sequence with the same email and your onboarding sequence, which must be active in Kit.

  6. Rehearse with a PayPal sandbox payment

Complete an approved sandbox payment through PayPal, then open the sequence's Events view and the subscriber in Kit. If nothing ran, switch on Run on test purchases in the sequence settings and try again, then switch it off. Check the email in the Test tab sample is the address you want in Kit.

  7. Decide what a refund does

Remove access on refund reacts to Stripe refunds only. For PayPal, plan to remove the tag in Kit yourself when you refund in PayPal.

What sellers do with PayPal and Kit (ConvertKit)

A paid newsletter guide

A writer sells a one-off guide to readers who would rather pay from their PayPal balance than type in a card. Every buyer gets the Guide buyer tag in Kit, and a Kit automation sends the download email and a month of follow-ups.

A coaching cohort with a waiting list

People join the waiting list through a Kit form, which starts a Plandalf sequence that enrols them in a promo. When they pay, by card or by PayPal, the Checkout Completed sequence swaps the waiting-list tag for a Cohort tag.

Limits and gotchas

  • Purchases never appear in Kit's purchase history. Plandalf connects with an API key, and Kit only takes purchase records from apps connected through its OAuth sign-in. Record the sale with a tag or a custom field.
  • Invoice Refunded fires for refunds that succeed in Stripe. A refund you make in PayPal leaves the Kit tag in place until you remove it.
  • There is no subscription-cancelled trigger, so a PayPal or card subscriber who cancels keeps their tag until you change it.
  • The Kit steps create the buyer as a Kit subscriber when they are not one yet, so make sure your checkout wording covers marketing email.
  • Kit allows 120 requests a minute per key. Plandalf retries a rate-limited step twice.

PayPal and Kit (ConvertKit): common questions

Does PayPal integrate with Kit?
Not as a direct connection. Plandalf sits between them: PayPal pays for the order on a Plandalf checkout and a Plandalf sequence then tags the buyer in Kit.
How do I connect PayPal to Kit (ConvertKit)?
Add PayPal to a Plandalf offer, connect Kit with a V4 key under Automation, and build a sequence that starts on Checkout Completed and runs Kit's Tag Subscriber step. Rehearse it with a PayPal sandbox payment.
How do I add PayPal buyers to Kit?
Use a Checkout Completed sequence with Tag Subscriber or Add Subscriber to Form. The Plandalf docs say PayPal buyers go through the same completion path as card buyers, so one sequence covers both.
Will a PayPal refund remove the tag in Kit?
No. The refund trigger is documented for refunds made in Stripe. After a PayPal refund, remove the tag in Kit or run a removal step from a sequence you start yourself.
