Shopify + Mailchimp integration

Mailchimp's Shopify app handles the store. A Plandalf offer opened from a Shopify page adds its buyers to the same audience, tagged and ready for a journey.

No credit card required. No coding required.

Does Shopify integrate with Mailchimp?

Plandalf does not read your Shopify orders. Mailchimp has its own Shopify app for that. Plandalf does have native Mailchimp steps: a Plandalf offer opened from a Shopify page can add the buyer to an audience, tag them and record an event that starts a Customer Journey, with no Zapier.

Tag Plandalf buyers in the audience your Shopify store already uses

You need a Mailchimp login that can open Extras, then API keys, and the audience that your Mailchimp for Shopify connection writes to.

  1. Find the audience

Mailchimp's help says each Shopify store connects to one audience. Use that audience in Plandalf as well, so store customers and offer buyers sit in one list. Create any merge fields there first, because Mailchimp does not create them on first use.

  2. Put the offer on a Shopify page

Paste the Plandalf SDK script into theme.liquid before the closing body tag. Add a button with data-plandalf-present and your offer slug to the product page or campaign landing page.

  3. Connect Mailchimp to Plandalf

Create a key under Extras, then API keys in Mailchimp and copy all of it, including the data centre part after the dash such as -us21. In Plandalf open Automation, then Marketplace, click Connect on Mailchimp and paste the key into API Key.

  4. Tag the buyer

Create a sequence under My Sequences with Plandalf and Checkout Completed as the trigger. Add Mailchimp, Add Tags to Contact, pick the audience, set Email Address to {{trigger.customer_email}} and type the tag.

  5. Record the event for the journey

Add Mailchimp, Record Event with an Event Name such as vip_upgrade and an event property built from {{trigger.line_items_summary}}. In Mailchimp start a Customer Journey from an event with that exact name.

  6. Add refund handling and test

Under Automation, then Templates, add Remove access on refund for the offer and pick the same audience and tag. Turn on Run on test purchases, buy with a test card using your own email, and confirm the tag in Mailchimp before you switch the setting off.

What sellers do with Shopify and Mailchimp

Member pricing tier on a retail store

A brand sells products through Shopify and a paid membership as a Plandalf offer from a banner on the same store. Members are tagged in the shared audience, so a segment in Mailchimp sends them member-only emails.

Ticketed event beside merchandise

A band or festival sells shirts in the Shopify cart and tickets through Plandalf. Ticket buyers trigger an event for a Customer Journey that sends door times and reminders, apart from the merchandise emails.

Limits and gotchas

  • Plandalf records purchases in Mailchimp as events and tags, not as ecommerce orders, so a Plandalf sale will not appear as a Mailchimp order or product. Orders from the cart come from Mailchimp's own Shopify app.
  • The API key must include the data centre suffix such as -us21. Without it Plandalf rejects the key as not looking like a Mailchimp key.
  • Status for New Contacts defaults to Subscribed. Choose Pending if you want Mailchimp to send its double opt-in confirmation to offer buyers.
  • The Contact Subscribed trigger also fires for subscribers that Plandalf itself adds to the audience. Filter or test carefully if one sequence both adds buyers and listens for new subscribers.
  • Mailchimp's help describes the Shopify app as syncing customer and order details. Plandalf does not read or change that sync.

Shopify and Mailchimp: common questions

Does Shopify integrate with Mailchimp?
Yes, Mailchimp has its own Shopify app that connects a store to one audience and syncs customers and order details. Plandalf does not run that sync.
How do I add Plandalf buyers to Mailchimp from a Shopify page?
Open the offer from a Shopify theme button and build a sequence on Checkout Completed that uses Mailchimp's Add Tags to Contact or Record Event step. The recipe above lists the settings.
Shopify Mailchimp integration: will a Plandalf offer sale show as an order?
No. It arrives in Mailchimp as a tag or a custom event, and Mailchimp events do not carry revenue. Keep the amount in an event property if you need it.
Can I use the same audience for the Shopify app and Plandalf?
Yes. Every Plandalf step asks which audience to use, so pick the audience your Shopify connection already writes to, or a separate one if you want the two kept apart.
