Native integration

PayPal + Teachable integration

A student who pays with PayPal on a Plandalf checkout can be found or created in Teachable and enrolled in the course they bought.

No credit card required. No coding required.

Does PayPal integrate with Teachable?

Plandalf connects them. PayPal takes the payment on a Plandalf checkout, then a sequence runs the native Teachable steps: find or create the student and enrol them in a course. It needs a Teachable school on the Growth plan or higher. A PayPal refund does not remove the student automatically.

What moves between PayPal and Teachable

EventFrom and toThroughWhat happens
Checkout completedPlandalf (paid via PayPal)TeachableNative stepEnrol Student in Course finds the student by email and creates them first if Teachable does not have them. Enrolling someone already in the course changes nothing. The PayPal docs describe one completion path for PayPal and cards.
Upsell acceptedPlandalf (paid via PayPal)TeachableNative stepA second Enrol Student in Course step can add the bonus course when the upsell is paid. The docs do not state how upsells behave with PayPal, so test that purchase path before launch.
Refund in PayPalPayPalTeachableBy handRemove Student from Course is documented behind the Invoice Refunded trigger, which fires for Stripe refunds. After a PayPal refund, remove the student in Teachable or run the step from a sequence you start with a Webhook Trigger.

Enrol PayPal buyers in a Teachable course

You need a Teachable school on the Growth plan or higher and a published Plandalf checkout for the course.

  1. Add PayPal to the course checkout

Connect PayPal in Plandalf, enable it on the course offer and keep card payment on beside it. Connect the sandbox environment for testing.

  2. Create a Teachable API key

In the school admin go to Settings, open the API tab, click Create API Key, name it Plandalf and copy the key. Read Teachable's usage fees page first: students added through the API count toward its fees.

  3. Connect Teachable

In Plandalf open Automation, Marketplace, Teachable, Connect. Paste the key into API Key and wait for Teachable connected.

  4. Enrol the buyer

Create a sequence on Plandalf, Checkout Completed, limited to the course checkout. Add Teachable, Enrol Student in Course: Email Address {{trigger.customer_email}}, the Course, Name {{trigger.customer_name}}. Unpublished courses are marked (unpublished) in the list.

  5. Rehearse the payment

Approve a PayPal sandbox payment and read the Events view, then check the student list in Teachable. The step test enrols a real student, so use your own email. Turn on Run on test purchases if the sequence was skipped.

  6. Decide who ends access

For PayPal refunds, remove the student in Teachable yourself. The Remove access on refund template is built for Stripe refunds.

What sellers do with PayPal and Teachable

An online course priced for international students

A teacher sells to students abroad, some of whom prefer to pay from a PayPal balance. They reach the same Plandalf offer and the same Teachable course, with no second product to maintain.

A course with a bonus course on a bump

The checkout adds a short bonus course as an order bump. Two Enrol Student in Course steps in one sequence cover the main course and the bonus, instead of one sequence per course.

Limits and gotchas

  • Teachable's API is only on the Growth plan or higher.
  • Students added through the API count toward Teachable usage fees. Plandalf's setup guide links to the figures, which depend on when the school was created.
  • The Invoice Refunded trigger is documented for refunds that succeed in Stripe, so a PayPal refund leaves the student enrolled.
  • A cancelled subscription does not remove anyone, since Plandalf has no subscription-cancelled trigger.

PayPal and Teachable: common questions

Does PayPal integrate with Teachable?
Plandalf connects them rather than the two apps syncing. PayPal takes the payment on a Plandalf checkout and a sequence enrols the student in Teachable. For PayPal inside Teachable's own checkout, read Teachable's payment gateway help.
How do I connect PayPal to Teachable?
Enable PayPal on a Plandalf offer, connect Teachable with an API key under Automation, then add a Checkout Completed sequence with the Enrol Student in Course step.
Do Teachable students enrolled this way cost extra?
Teachable counts students added through its API toward its usage fees. Check Teachable's current usage fees for your school before you automate enrolment.
How do I add PayPal buyers to a Teachable course?
Run Enrol Student in Course from a sequence that starts when the Plandalf checkout completes. Test with a PayPal sandbox payment.
