# Thinkific setup

Sell your Thinkific courses and bundles through a Plandalf checkout. When someone pays, a sequence finds or creates them as a Thinkific student and enrols them in what they bought. New students get Thinkific’s welcome email with their sign-in link.

## Before you start

- A Thinkific school on the Grow plan or above. Thinkific’s API isn’t available on lower plans.
- Access to your school’s **Settings**, to copy the API key.
- The courses and bundles you sell, set up in Thinkific.

## Get your Thinkific details

Plandalf needs two values: your **school subdomain** and an **API key**.

1. [Note your subdomain](#note-thinkific-subdomain)

Your subdomain is the first part of your school address. For `yourschool.thinkific.com`, it is `yourschool`.

2. [Open the API settings](#open-thinkific-api)

In Thinkific, go to **Settings**, select the **Code & analytics** tab and scroll to the **API** section.

3. [Copy the key](#copy-thinkific-key)

Copy the API key. Thinkific shows it only once. If you no longer have it, click **Reset key** and copy the new one, then update anything else that used the old key.

## Connect Thinkific to Plandalf

1. [Find Thinkific in the Marketplace](#find-thinkific-in-marketplace)

In Plandalf, open **Automation** in the sidebar and choose the **Marketplace** tab. Find **Thinkific** under **Available now** and click **Connect**.

2. [Enter your details](#enter-thinkific-details)

In the **Connect Thinkific** window, keep or change the **Integration name**. Enter your **School subdomain** and paste the **API Key**, then click **Connect**. If you paste your full school address into the subdomain field, Plandalf keeps just the subdomain.

3. [Check the result](#check-thinkific-connection)

Plandalf checks the key with Thinkific straight away. When you see **Thinkific connected**, choose **Build an automation** or **Not now**.

## Steps you can add

Each step works from the student’s email address and looks them up in Thinkific for you, so you don’t need to pass an ID between steps.

### Find or Create Student

Finds a Thinkific student by email, or creates one.

- **Email Address** (required), usually `{{trigger.customer_email}}`.
- **First Name**: used if the student is new, usually `{{trigger.customer_first_name}}`. If blank, Plandalf uses the start of the email address.
- **Last Name**: usually `{{trigger.customer_last_name}}`. Thinkific requires one, so a dash is used if blank.
- **Send Thinkific welcome email**: on by default. New students get Thinkific’s welcome email with their sign-in link. Turn it off if you send your own.

### Enrol Student

Gives someone access to a course or bundle, creating the student first if Thinkific doesn’t have them. Access starts as soon as the step runs.

- **Email Address** (required).
- **Course or bundle** (required): pick from your school’s courses and bundles. Bundles are marked “(bundle)” and drafts “(draft)”.
- **First Name**, **Last Name** and **Send Thinkific welcome email**, used if the student is new.

If the student is already enrolled, nothing changes. If their access was ended before, for example by **Remove Student Access**, enrolling them again restores it.

### Remove Student Access

Ends someone’s access to a course or bundle now, by setting the enrolment to expire immediately. Thinkific keeps the enrolment record, which is why enrolling the same person again can restore it. If Thinkific has no student with that email, or they have no access, the step is skipped.

- **Email Address** (required).
- **Course or bundle** (required).

Plandalf has no refund or cancellation trigger yet, so this step can’t run on its own when a buyer refunds. Run it from a sequence you start yourself, such as one with a **Webhook Trigger**, or end access in Thinkific.

## Example: enrol buyers in a bundle

1. [Create the sequence](#thinkific-example-create)

Go to **Automation → My Sequences** and create a sequence called “Bundle buyers to Thinkific”.

2. [Set the trigger](#thinkific-example-trigger)

Choose **Plandalf** and **Checkout Completed**. Under **Offer**, pick the checkout that sells the bundle. On **3\. Test**, pick a recent checkout as the sample record.

3. [Enrol the buyer](#thinkific-example-enrol)

Click **Add a step**, choose **Thinkific** and **Enrol Student**, and pick your Thinkific account. Set **Email Address** to `{{trigger.customer_email}}`, pick the bundle under **Course or bundle**, and set **First Name** and **Last Name** to `{{trigger.customer_first_name}}` and `{{trigger.customer_last_name}}`.

4. [Test and turn it on](#thinkific-example-on)

Testing enrols a real student and can send them Thinkific’s welcome email, so use your own email. Then turn the sequence **On**.

To try it with a test card, switch on **Run on test purchases** in the sequence’s **Settings** first. Test purchases skip automations by default.

## Common errors

| What you see | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **Authentication failed** when connecting | Check the subdomain and key, and that your plan includes the API. Thinkific also answers this way when the key was reset. Plandalf keeps the failed connection in **My apps**. Open it there, correct the details and choose **Test Connection**, rather than connecting again. |
| “Email is empty” | Map **Email Address** to `{{trigger.customer_email}}` and check the trigger sample has an email. |
| “Pick the Thinkific course or bundle” | The **Course or bundle** field is empty. Pick one from the list. |
| “Failed to enrol the student in Thinkific” | Thinkific’s reason follows the message. Check the course or bundle still exists. |
| A student didn’t get a welcome email | They were already a Thinkific student, or **Send Thinkific welcome email** was off. Thinkific only sends it to new students. |
| Remove Student Access shows **skipped** | The person has no access to that course or bundle. Nothing needed removing. |
