# Kajabi setup

Connect your Kajabi site so buyers from Plandalf checkouts end up in Kajabi. When someone pays, a sequence can find or create them as a Kajabi contact and apply your tags, so you can segment them in Kajabi.

> [!NOTE]
> **What the Kajabi steps do today**
> The Kajabi steps create contacts and apply existing tags. They don’t grant a Kajabi offer, so they don’t give course access on their own, and they can’t create new tags. There are no Kajabi triggers yet.

## Before you start

- A Kajabi plan that includes the Public API. The current Pro plan includes it. Older Pro plans need Kajabi’s Public API add-on.
- Owner or Subowner access to the Kajabi account, to create API credentials.
- The tags you want to apply, already created in Kajabi.

## Get your Kajabi credentials

Plandalf needs three values from Kajabi: a **Client ID**, a **Client Secret** and your **Site ID**.

1. [Open the Public API settings](#open-kajabi-public-api)

In your Kajabi dashboard, go to **Settings** and open **Public API**, under Account Settings.

2. [Create a key](#create-kajabi-key)

Click **Create User API Key**. Name it “Plandalf”, choose the account user, and give it permission to read and edit contacts and to read tags. Click **Create**.

3. [Copy the client ID and secret](#copy-kajabi-credentials)

Copy the **client ID** and **client secret** Kajabi shows for the key. These are not the API key and secret Kajabi gives you for Zapier.

4. [Find your Site ID](#find-kajabi-site-id)

While signed in to Kajabi, look at the address bar. Your Site ID is the number after `/admin/sites/`.

## Connect Kajabi to Plandalf

1. [Find Kajabi in the Marketplace](#find-kajabi-in-marketplace)

In Plandalf, open **Automation** in the sidebar and choose the **Marketplace** tab. Find **Kajabi** under **Available now** and click **Connect**.

2. [Enter the three values](#enter-kajabi-credentials)

In the **Connect Kajabi** window, keep or change the **Integration name**. Paste the **Client ID**, **Client Secret** and **Site ID**, then click **Connect**.

3. [Check the result](#check-kajabi-connection)

Plandalf signs in to Kajabi straight away. When you see **Kajabi connected**, choose **Build an automation** or **Not now**.

## Steps you can add

### Find or Create Contact

Finds a Kajabi contact by email, or creates one.

- **Email Address** (required), usually `{{trigger.customer_email}}`.
- **Contact Name**: the full name, used when the contact is created. Usually `{{trigger.customer_name}}`.

The step returns the contact’s `contact_id` and whether it was `found` or `created`. New contacts are created as subscribed to your Kajabi emails, so only send buyers who agreed to hear from you.

### Create Contact Tag

Applies one or more existing tags to a contact. Despite the name, it doesn’t create tags in Kajabi.

- **Tags** (required): pick tags from your Kajabi account, or type the name of an existing tag. A typed name with spaces must be in double quotes, for example `"VIP Customer"`.
- **Contact ID** (required): pick `contact_id` from the Find or Create Contact step in the variable menu.

## Example: tag every buyer in Kajabi

1. [Create the tag in Kajabi](#kajabi-example-tag)

In Kajabi, create the tag you want, for example “Plandalf buyer”.

2. [Create the sequence](#kajabi-example-create)

In Plandalf, go to **Automation → My Sequences** and create a sequence called “Buyers to Kajabi”.

3. [Set the trigger](#kajabi-example-trigger)

Choose **Plandalf** and **Checkout Completed**. Under **Offer**, pick your checkout. On **3\. Test**, pick a recent checkout as the sample record.

4. [Find or create the contact](#kajabi-example-contact)

Click **Add a step**, choose **Kajabi** and **Find or Create Contact**, and pick your Kajabi account. Set **Email Address** to `{{trigger.customer_email}}` and **Contact Name** to `{{trigger.customer_name}}`. Run its test so the next step can use its output.

5. [Tag them](#kajabi-example-apply-tag)

Add a second step: **Kajabi**, **Create Contact Tag**. Pick “Plandalf buyer” under **Tags**. For **Contact ID**, pick `contact_id` from the previous step.

6. [Test and turn it on](#kajabi-example-on)

Testing creates and tags a real contact, so use your own email. Then turn the sequence **On**.

To try it with a test card, switch on **Run on test purchases** in the sequence’s **Settings** first. Test purchases skip automations by default.

## Common errors

| What you see | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| **Authentication failed** when connecting | Check you used the Public API client ID and secret, not the Zapier key, and that your plan includes the Public API. Plandalf keeps the failed connection in **My apps**. Open it there, correct the values and choose **Test Connection**, rather than connecting again. |
| Contacts appear on the wrong Kajabi site, or none are found | Check the **Site ID** on the connection matches the number in your Kajabi admin address. |
| “email is empty” | The email field didn’t resolve. Map it to `{{trigger.customer_email}}` and check the trigger sample has an email. |
| “contact\_id is empty” | The Find or Create Contact step failed or isn’t mapped. Fix that step, then pick its `contact_id` in **Contact ID**. |
| “Tag not found in Kajabi” | The typed tag doesn’t exist in Kajabi. Create it in Kajabi first, or pick it from the list. |
| “Tag names containing spaces must be wrapped in double quotes” | Type the name as `"VIP Customer"`, or pick it from the list. |
| “Selected Kajabi tag no longer exists” | The tag was deleted in Kajabi. Pick a tag again. |
