# What is a digital product? Types and examples

A digital product is something sold and delivered electronically. The main types, real examples of each, and how each one is priced and delivered at checkout.

**Plandalf Team**November 3, 20265 min read

A digital product is something you sell and deliver electronically, so the buyer receives it as a file, a link, a login or a licence rather than a parcel. Because there is nothing to ship, copying a file or a licence usually costs the seller very little (live sessions and services still take the seller’s time), and the buyer expects delivery within minutes of paying.

## Types of digital products, with examples

Most digital products fall into six groups. The group matters because it decides how you price the product and how you deliver it.

Type

Examples

Usual price

Usual delivery

Downloads

Ebooks, templates, spreadsheets, presets, stock photos, fonts, printables

One-time

Link or file after purchase

Courses and lessons

Video courses, cohort programmes, workshops

One-time, payment plan

Login to a course area, or a private link

Software and licences

Apps, plugins, themes, scripts, licence keys

One-time or subscription

Download plus a key, or an account

Memberships and communities

Paid newsletters, private communities, premium content libraries

Subscription

Access granted in another tool

Recordings and events

Webinar replays, online conference tickets, live sessions

One-time

Calendar invite, join link or replay link

Digital services sold as a product

A fixed-scope audit, a logo review, a templated report

One-time

Email, call booking or a delivered file

Some products mix groups. A course with a template pack is a course and a download; a community with a yearly ebook is a membership and a download. Pick the group that carries most of the value and treat the rest as add-ons.

## How a digital product differs from a physical one

- **No shipping and no stock.** You do not hold inventory, so a downloadable file can be sold to any number of buyers. Live cohorts, workshops and services are different: they can have a real capacity limit set by your time.
- **Delivery is part of the product.** A buyer who pays and then waits for a link has had a worse product than one who gets it at once.
- **Copies are easy to share.** A plain download link can be passed on. If that matters, deliver through something that gates access per buyer.
- **Tax can still apply.** Sales tax or VAT can apply to digital products depending on where you and your buyers are. This guide does not give rates or thresholds; ask an accountant or your tax authority.

## How a digital product is sold

Selling one needs the same four parts whatever the type:

1. **A price.** One-time, subscription, payment plan or tiers. The [pricing model table in the selling guide](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-26-how-to-sell-digital-products) matches each to the product types above.
2. **A checkout.** A page that shows the product and price and takes payment through a processor such as Stripe or PayPal.
3. **Delivery.** A redirect, an email or access granted in another tool, started by the purchase.
4. **A test.** One purchase run end to end, as a new buyer, before you sell.

## An example: pricing and delivering a template pack

Take a freelancer selling a spreadsheet pack. This is an illustration of the steps, not a customer story.

- **Type:** download, so a one-time price fits.
- **Checkout:** one product with one price. In Plandalf, a [product holds its prices](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/products), and the checkout is built in [Offers](https://plandalf.com/products/checkouts), shared as a hosted link or embedded on your own site.
- **Add-on:** a second, related template as an [order bump](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/order-bumps) on the checkout. For when add-ons help and when they annoy buyers, see [what is an upsell](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-20-what-is-an-upsell).
- **Delivery:** the after-purchase setting sends the buyer to a page holding the download, and a [purchase automation](https://plandalf.com/products/automations/purchase-automations) can email the same link. Plandalf’s docs describe the checkout and the steps around it, not file hosting, so the file stays wherever you already keep it.
- **Deadline, if any:** a launch price that really ends. [Scarcity marketing examples](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-22-scarcity-marketing-examples) covers how to tie a timer to a price that actually changes.

## What is not a digital product

- **A physical product sold through a website.** The order is digital, the item is not.
- **A payment link by itself.** It takes money; it does not deliver anything.
- **A service you deliver live to one person.** A one-off consultation is a service. It becomes a digital product when it is packaged and delivered the same way each time, such as a fixed-scope report.

## How to start

1. Write the buyer’s problem in one sentence, and pick the type from the table.
2. Choose one price for the first version.
3. Build the checkout and connect Stripe or PayPal.
4. Set up automatic delivery.
5. Run a test purchase and open the product as a new buyer. The [Stripe test card picker](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-31-stripe-test-cards) lists the card numbers for a successful payment, a decline and 3D Secure.

## FAQ

### What is a digital product in simple terms?

Something you sell that the buyer receives electronically, such as an ebook, a template, a course, a licence key or a membership. Nothing is shipped.

### What are examples of digital products?

Ebooks, templates, spreadsheets, presets, printables, video courses, plugins, software licences, paid newsletters, communities and webinar replays.

### What are the types of digital products?

Downloads, courses and lessons, software and licences, memberships and communities, recordings and events, and packaged digital services.

### Is a digital service a digital product?

Only when it is packaged and delivered the same way to every buyer, like a fixed-scope audit report. A custom, live service is a service.

### Do digital products need a website?

No. A hosted checkout link can go in an email, a social bio or a message, and you can embed the same checkout on a site later.

### How are digital products delivered after payment?

Through a redirect to a download or login page, an email with the link or key, or access granted in another tool. Set it up before you launch and test it as a new buyer.
