# How to sell digital products: checkout, pricing, delivery

How to sell digital products online in seven steps: pick the product, set the price, take payment, deliver instantly, add bumps and upsells, and test the whole path.

**Plandalf Team**October 26, 20268 min read

To sell digital products online, you need four things: a product people will pay for, a price, a checkout that takes payment through a processor such as Stripe or PayPal, and a way to deliver the product the moment the payment clears. The step most sellers skip is testing it end to end.

The Plandalf steps below follow Plandalf’s docs as of 26 October 2026. This guide has no screenshots of the Plandalf interface and does not include a recorded test purchase with delivery, so check each setting against what you see in your own account.

## Before you start

- A product you can hand over as a file, a link or an access grant: an ebook, template, course, preset pack, software licence, membership or recording.
- An account with a payment processor. Plandalf connects to [Stripe](https://plandalf.com/platforms/stripe) and [PayPal](https://plandalf.com/platforms/paypal); the processor takes the payment, Plandalf builds the checkout and the steps around it.
- A place where the product lives: a file host, a members area, a course platform, a private repository or a shared folder.
- Time to run a test purchase before you sell.

## How to sell digital products, step by step

### 1\. Decide what you are selling and who it is for

A digital product is anything delivered electronically rather than shipped. The common types are downloads (ebooks, templates, presets, stock assets), courses and lessons, software and licence keys, memberships and communities, and recordings or events. The delivery step differs for each, so decide which you have before you pick tools.

Write the buyer’s problem in one sentence (“a spreadsheet that works out my freelance tax each quarter”). If you cannot, the product page will not be able to either.

### 2\. Choose how to price it

Pick one pricing model for the first version:

Model

Fits

One-time price

Templates, ebooks, presets, one-off courses

Subscription

Memberships, communities, ongoing content or software

Payment plan

Higher-priced courses and programmes

Tiers

A basic version and a version with extras

Keep the first price simple. You can add a second price later for a launch deal or a bundle. In Plandalf, a [product holds the prices](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/products) (one-time, recurring and others), and a promo can switch which price applies on a deadline; see [pricing models](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/pricing).

### 3\. Build a checkout that matches your site

The checkout is where buyers decide. Keep it to what the buyer needs: the product, the price, the payment methods your processor supports, and a clear button. Branding that matches your site helps buyers trust a page that asks for card details.

With [Offers](https://plandalf.com/products/checkouts) you build a checkout in the editor, attach the product and price, and share it as a hosted link or embed it on your own site. Hosted checkouts live on your Plandalf subdomain; to keep buyers on your own domain, embed with the SDK ([hosted checkout docs](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/hosted-checkout)).

### 4\. Connect payments

Connect Stripe or PayPal so the checkout can take money. Catalog setup can happen before this, but a checkout without a connected provider cannot charge anyone, and Plandalf shows a “Connect Stripe to take payments” prompt until you do.

Payment fees, payouts and chargebacks are set by the processor. Check their current pricing pages rather than a blog post, including this one.

### 5\. Deliver the product automatically

Delivery is what makes a digital product different from a physical one: the buyer expects it within minutes, without you doing anything. There are three common ways:

- **Send buyers to the product.** Set the thank-you page or the redirect after purchase to a page that holds the download or the login. Plandalf’s **After purchase** setting sends buyers to a URL of your choice, or shows the thank-you page you built.
- **Email it.** A purchase triggers an email with the link or licence key. Plandalf [purchase automations](https://plandalf.com/products/automations/purchase-automations) can start emails, CRM updates, alerts and access steps from a purchase.
- **Grant access in another tool.** Your course platform or membership site receives the purchase and unlocks the content, through an integration, a webhook or Zapier. See [integrations](https://plandalf.com/integrations).

Plandalf’s docs, as of 26 October 2026, describe the checkout and the automation steps around it, not file hosting. Keep the file where it already lives and deliver the link.

### 6\. Add an order bump or upsell

Once the basic path works, raise the order value with something relevant at the point of purchase: a related template as an [order bump](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/order-bumps) on the checkout, or a bigger package as an upsell after payment. Keep them related to what the buyer is already getting. For when each works and when it annoys people, read [what is an upsell](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-20-what-is-an-upsell).

If you run a launch deal, make the deadline real. [Honest scarcity examples](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-22-scarcity-marketing-examples) explains how to tie a timer to a price that actually changes.

### 7\. Test the whole path before you sell

Run a test purchase and check every stage, not just the payment:

1. Connect Stripe (Test) in **Settings**, on the **Advanced** page, then open the checkout’s **Share** tab and use **Test mode link** while signed in as a member of your organization. Adding `?mode=test` to a URL is not enough: without a Stripe test account or authorization, a test request can resolve to live mode, so confirm the checkout is in test mode before entering card details ([testing before you publish](https://plandalf.com/docs/product-guides/checkouts/hosted-checkout#testing-before-you-publish)).
2. Test purchases skip automation sequences unless **Run on test purchases** is enabled for that sequence. Turn it on for the delivery automation before you pay.
3. Pay with a Stripe test card; the [Stripe test card picker](https://plandalf.com/blog/2026-10-31-stripe-test-cards) lists the number for a successful payment, a decline and 3D Secure.
4. Check the total, tax and any coupon on the checkout, then the payment in your Stripe test account and the test invoice (in **Settings**, on the **Advanced** page, choose **View test invoices**).
5. Check the delivery email arrived and the link works on a phone.
6. Confirm the access or file actually opens for a new buyer who has no login yet.

A test payment does not by itself prove fulfilment ran, so do not skip steps 5 and 6.

## Taxes and records

Sales tax and VAT can apply to digital products, and the rules depend on where you and your buyers are. This guide does not give rates or thresholds; ask an accountant or your tax authority. Plandalf has [tax integrations](https://plandalf.com/platforms/tax) (Avalara and TaxJar) and invoices that keep the price and customer details with each sale.

## If it does not work

- **The buyer paid but got nothing.** The delivery step did not run. Check the automation is turned on, that it is not set to skip the kind of purchase you made, and look at the invoice to see the payment cleared.
- **The checkout will not take payment.** The payment provider is not connected, or you are in a mode that does not match your keys. Check the connection in settings.
- **Delivery emails land in spam.** Send from a domain you control, and keep the email short with one link. Your email provider’s setup guide covers sender authentication.
- **The link opens for anyone.** A download URL that is shared once can be passed around. If that matters, deliver through a tool that gates access per buyer.
- **The thank-you page works on desktop only.** Open it on a phone. Buyers often pay from the device where they will read the product.

## FAQ

### How do I sell digital products online?

Choose a product, set a price, build a checkout, connect a payment processor such as Stripe or PayPal, set up automatic delivery, and test a purchase end to end. You can start with a single hosted checkout link and no website.

### What is the best platform to sell digital products?

It depends on what you sell and where. Marketplaces handle traffic and delivery but take a cut and control the page. A checkout tool on your own payment account gives you the page, the customer data and the pricing. Compare current pricing on each platform’s own site before deciding; see [Plandalf vs Gumroad](https://plandalf.com/alternatives/gumroad) and [vs SamCart](https://plandalf.com/comparisons/samcart-alternative) for two examples.

### Do I need a website to sell digital products?

No. A hosted checkout link can go in an email, a social bio or a message. A website helps people find you, and you can embed the same checkout on it later.

### How do customers receive a digital product after paying?

Through a redirect to a download or login page, an email with the link or key, or access granted in another tool. Set this up before launch and test it as a new buyer.

### Can I sell digital products with Stripe or PayPal?

Both are payment processors you can connect to a checkout. Each has its own rules on what you may sell and its own fees, so read their current terms and pricing pages.

### Can I sell a subscription as a digital product?

Yes. Memberships, communities and software are often sold as subscriptions. Choose a recurring price on the product instead of a one-time price.
